The Role of the Department of Child Support Services

The DCSS is the agency responsible for administering all services and functions necessary to establish, distribute and collect child support. This agency has offices in every county in the State of California and is able to move quickly. Our lawyers move equally as fast in responding to these cases.

Public Assistance and DCSS Cases

Often, DCSS cases are opened when the custodial parent applies for public assistance, formerly known as welfare. When the application is granted and money is paid out by the county, DCSS may seek reimbursement from the non-custodial parent for the funds that it is paying to support the children. Essentially, what the agency is doing is forcing child support. This can happen even if there have never been any child support orders in place.

Our role is to review the various options. In some cases, it may be necessary to do a DNA test and establish paternity. Once paternity is established, different child custody arrangements may be sought that would impact the amount paid. In other cases, it may simply be a matter of preventing too much money from being garnished from your paycheck. Our goal is to take the steps necessary in these complex cases to make certain the outcome is fair to you.
