How to move on after a divorce

On Behalf of | Nov 13, 2020 | Uncategorized

Those who are beginning to come to terms with the fact that a divorce is in the cards may feel heartbroken, hopeless and deflated. In today’s world of picture-perfect posts on social media, many people feel that they need to project the image of a perfect life. Having to tell family, friends and acquaintances that they are going through a divorce can make them feel embarrassed or ashamed.

It is important to remember that, while you may not be in control of what happens to you, you are always in control of how you react to the situations that present themselves. You could choose to react to divorce by interpreting it as a sign that you have failed, or you could view it as the perfect opportunity to reinvent yourself and live the life you’ve always wanted. The following are some tips for moving on positively after a divorce.

Be constructive in your wallowing

When going through a divorce, it’s natural to have days when you only want to stay in bed and cry. You should honor your feelings, but whenever possible, try to wallow in a constructive way. This could mean keeping a journal and writing down everything you think or feel. Or it could be going out for a run to get an endorphin boost rather than binge-watching a series.

Forgive yourself

Guilt is all too common in divorcees. If you have children, you may be worried that divorce will negatively affect their childhood and upbringing. You may also blame yourself for the breakdown of the marriage. These are difficult subjects to process, and it’s advisable to go through therapy and counseling so that you can relieve yourself of the burden of guilt and move forward positively.

If you are struggling to move forward when going through the process of divorce, it is important that you are organized in your approach and understand how the law is in place to protect you.
